Frequently asked questions

What does a French invoice need beyond the EU basics?

French invoices add, among others, the payment due date, the late payment penalty rate, the fixed 40 € recovery indemnity for business customers and, for some companies, the legal form, share capital and SIREN number. The French invoice guide has the full checklist.

When does e-invoicing start in France?

From 1 September 2026 every French business must be able to receive e-invoices, and large and mid-size companies must issue them. Small and micro businesses must issue them from 1 September 2027. Invoices go through approved platforms.

What is an avoir?

An avoir is the French credit note. It corrects or cancels all or part of an invoice already issued, refers to that invoice and carries its own number in the same sequence.
